I love to read, especially cuddled up on the sofa with the cat and a cup of tea. Recently I have read 3 really, really excellent books:
The miniaturist – Jessie Burton
Monkey Man bought me this book for Christmas – it has a weird start, but don’t let this put you off. I don’t often read books set in this era, instead going for novels set in Victorian England. This book, however, is set in 1686, in Amsterdam. It’s an intriguing book, with unusual characters and I found it gripping but also very sad. It’s one of those books which, when you’ve finished, you think ‘how did the writer come up with that?!’
We have always lived in a castle – Shirley Jackson
My sister is OBSESSED with Shirley Jackson and we don’t usually have the same tastes in literature so I was a bit apprehensive when I started this book – but I loved it. It’s an eery book but its written SO cleverly and carefully. The plot sets the scene so well you can visualise every little bit of it. I felt it was like a really dark Great Gatsby – distressing glamour.
Unbecoming – Rebecca Scherm
I heard about this book on Twitter – lot’s of people were chatting about it and it didn’t disappoint. I couldn’t put this book down and loved how the plot unraveled slowly with connections and turns you wouldn’t expect. The relationships between the characters is what makes it special and its an almost love story with a twist, honestly it’s brilliant.
