‘We talked like lovers and laughed like best friends’

He’d only been gone half an hour before he phoned her. He’d thought it might be too eager but had been instantly reassured when he’d heard her voice, and the smile in it.

It had started with smiles across crowded rooms, somehow seeking out each other’s eyes. Everyone had noticed and encouraged them to talk, and they had.

And so it had begun.

When she was in a room he couldn’t concentrate on anything anyone was saying, and if he was there she couldn’t take her eyes off him. Their thoughts were entwined in a way neither of them had experienced before. He made her laugh, and she fascinated him.

Their moments together were moments to be savoured, moments that could never be taken away from either of them, moments that would never last and were never meant to.
